On one of Rebecca's shows she mentioned one way of storing geraniums over winter was to put them in a brown bag in the basement so they wouldn't take up so much space in the house.
I would like more details on how to do this--do they need to be moistened at all thru the winter, do you cut all the stem and leaves off, etc.?? |

All you need to do is pull the entire plant out of its container or window box, roots and all. Shake of excess soil and place plant into brown paper bag. Store in a cool, dark, dry location (basement). Check on geraniumss every few weeks. If the plant's stem starts to shrivel, gently mist it lightly. If the plants develop mold, it's too wet. Open the bag and let them dry out. I usually never have to do anything to mine.
In late January, repot the plants in containers filled with soil. Cut stems down leaving 2-3 inches. Water and wait. In no time the plants should start growing all over again - but because you're getting a jumpstart, you will have bigger plants earlier in the season. actually i bring the whole plant in, put in a sunny room and continue watering it as usual.. it will continue to flower. It might get a little lanky, but in the spring it can very easily be cut back an little, rooting the cuttings is very easy also... i have one that is over 5 years old and still going strong...

Yup! That's how mine live the winter through. They are treated like house plants with a very light fertilizer in the water (the "blue water"
treatment my Mother always used). I love the scent of the bruised leaves as I pass by to open a drawer or dust a shelf. Set them out in the spring, increase
the fertilizer strength and watch them bloom! Jean
