I planted hollyhocks for the first time. Will these plants come back next year? Someone told me I had to collect seeds...is that true?

I found that planting seeds don't grow strong healthy plants like buying plants all ready established

We bought a bag of six hollyhock bulbs at Wal-Mart. We planted them last year. They did not bloom last year and they only got about 4 and 1/2 feet tall. This year they have bloomed and they are over 7 feet tall. I don't know if hollyhocks are started by seed or not. Does anyone know, if next year, if we pinch them back, maybe they won't get this tall?
The leaves on our plants have been turning yellow and getting brownish/black spots on them. We don't know what it is. We are wondering if anyone has any ideas on this. |

I don't know what kind of "hollyhock bulbs" Walmart is selling but what a scam! Hollyhocks grown from seeds quite easily. You can plant them in fall or spring, depending on your climate. I got seeds from my mom the first year and when the seed pods ripened and scattered they self-seeded and I STILL have hollyhocks, three years later! Some of the plants over-wintered in Southern California and I suspect they'd do the same anywhere else with a similar climate.
I have terrible alkaline soil and it's hot and dry here, so I make sure the plants get plenty of water, especially when the seedlings are young. The spots may be rust. Hollyhocks are very susceptible to rust and there's really not much you can do about it. It doesn't affect the blooms at all. I don't know about pinching them back. The first year mine were about 5 to 6 feet tall and the second year some of mine got over 9 feet tall. That's been consistent since I've been planting hollyhocks... If you want to reseed next year, collect the seeds when the round seed pods are dry and brown. I put them in paper bags that are labeled with the color of the flowers. Anyone who'd like some free seeds for single hollyhocks from old pioneer stock can email me. I'll give you my address and all you have to do is send a SASE for some seeds. I didn't separate the seeds this year, but I have lots of shades of pink, along with yellow, white, and maroon. Diann kalindria @ gmail.com (without the spaces) |

Thank you for responding to my post about the problems with our hollyhocks.
About the "bulb" thing, this actually worked better for us because we really don't have very good luck with seeds. I have planted some with a fair amount of luck though. I guess ours are not as tall as yours, maybe next year they will even be taller. Thanks again. |

Diann, I tried to email you with a request for some of those hollyhock seeds. I checked the email address twice and I was unable to send you an email. Would you be so kind as to verify your correct email address so that I might try again. If I have difficulty again, then I will give you my email address.
Thank You. bakerhen |

It's been over 2 years and I'm still getting emails and people aren't sending SASE (that means self-addressed, stamped envelope). This year a gopher attacked my hollyhocks and I have no seeds. You can easily find them on auction sites if you really want some.
But in the future, please pay attention to the directions. If someone is handing out free seeds, you shouldn't expect them to pay for postage too! |

I have plants again this year and too many (I hope) for the gopher to eat them all. I will have hollyhock seeds again this fall if anyone wants them. All you
have to do is email me to get my address and send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your seeds. I love sharing!

I am new to the forum. Would love some hollyhock seeds. Will email for address and send a SASE.
I will be trying to start a double cream-colored variety this fall. Will let you know how it goes. (Just for info, hollyhocks are biennial. Each plant only last two years and dies. By dropping seeds, they continually reseed themselves.) aghpr@hotmail.com |
